After the endless promotion of my song "Don't Cry", Newtonbrook's yearbook class teacher came up with the wonderful idea of making a soundtrack for the school year. I, who had been striving to release new content, thought this was the best idea I ever heard.
And so it started, the beginning of a 4 song project that would change my musical life. This is how I created "The Newtonbrook Soundtrack".
Hidden in my catalogue of beats lied "No Test", a wonderful, chill pop beat that didn't know where to go in the list of singles to be released. Also in the catalogue was "Don't Forget About Us", a sad R&B song that I was saving from years ago for the right moment. As my school was filled with students of different tastes and genres, I thought these would be a wonderful addition to the project. People already knew "Don't Cry", so I thought that would be a wonderful introduction to the EP. Lastly was a beat I found from Unknown Instrumentalz, which finished off all the genre diversity with a hard hip hop banger. This was "You Know How We Do"
I made "Don't Cry" the intro song, sort of like an anti-gun PSA before the school fun began. Then, "You Know How We Do" was second because it was more in the Hip Hop realm with a banger that catered to the sports teams. Third song relaxed the listeners and made them dance, this was "No Test". Last song reflected on he fact that we all leave in the end and how much we really loved the school, this was "Don't Forget About Us".
Lyrics & Recording
The lyrics were written before the recording studio session, because SAVINGS lol. The lyrics emphasized the meaning behind the production and organization. "No Test" was written very flashy and flamboyant, "You Know How We Do" was written to make the players feel like champions before they even stepped on the field, and "Don't Forget About Us" was written to make the listeners reflect on their years and get emotional.
When the recording process came along it was very simple, the mood SoundScan Studios sets with their deep blue lights and dark recording booth really got me in the mood, and with careful planning and practice, every song was recorded in about 40 minutes or less. As a matter of fact, "No Test" was recorded first try, and adlibs/backing vocals were recorded after. This took half an hour tops.
Yeah, They did a good job with that one at SoundScan :)
After all of the uploading and lyric typing, all that was left was a photoshoot, album cover design and the official release!!!
I think that the release of this soundtrack and me being the school's Artist Of The Year was a fun experience. In all honesty, I hope that the school starts having more "Artists Of The Year" and more students get to showcase their musical talent like I did. This could be the start of something special in the school's yearbook, and something all upcoming artists from Newtonbrook can look forward to.
However, just like my yearbook teacher, it all starts with an idea.
